Sure, you and Woodsxc, Clapton is tamer, as I stated; doesn't mean he's not an excellent bluesman, and, as someone as novice is myself is offering a suggestion to the original poster, I think Clapton & Taj and a few modern others is a great place to get started. Besides, I've certainly reached for the whiskey and cigs while listening to Clapton. . did he make me reach for them? No, I reached for them because he was so good and so inspiring. . . A true student.

Michael Katon, Joe Bonamassa and Sonny Landreth come to my mind. And if youmean REAL hard take Five Horse Johnson.

If he hasn't been mentioned already, Johnny Winter can play some mean blues.

+1 on Roy Buchanan. I'm also a fan of (in no particular order):

Tab Benoit
Mighty Sam McClain
Albert Collins
John Lee Hooker
Lonnie Mack (a true finger-bleeding guitar player)
Lonnie Brooks
Tinsley Ellis
George Thorogood (can't believe he wasn't mentioned before)
Delbert McClinton (most)

A great introduction is to get your hands onsome of the "Genuine Houserockin' Music" CD's or Anniversary Collections from Alligator Records.

I know you wanted modern, but one guy cannot be left out Blind Willie McTell.
