Haeckel Col

by sheptrad » Tue Jul 19, 2011 7:24 am

Anyone been up and over Haeckel Col for a direct approach in the Evolution area. I am wondering how difficult it is and if snow travel gear would be needed. Whatever info about this approach would be greatly appreciated. I am leading up a trip of "hikers" and wondering if it would be too much for them. But, i really like the looks of Haeckel Peak and it would be good recon for an Evolution Traverse one day. Trip date is August 4th.

We did Haeckel/Wallace July 9-10. Camped at sailor lake, there are dry spots. Ice axe/crampon needed in the morning to get to the col. Dicey to the top of haeckel because snow covered the easier route. Snow is melting fast. Snow is much softer in the afternoon. Trekking poles were handy in crossing some of the creeks.
