Haeckel and Wallace Conditions?

by hikinedd » Thu Sep 01, 2011 2:56 am

Heading to Hungry Packer Lake for the weekend to climb Haeckel and Wallace, and possibly 13,332', and have no idea what to pack for it toolwise. For Labor Day weekend I wasn't planning on crampons/axe, but -- since the season is at least a month behind -- is that the only way up? Thanks.

Did Evolution Traverse 2 weeks ago (granted conditions may have changed and I didn't come up from Hungry Packer). The snow was soft during the day, but started firming up in the evening. There's not a lot of snow to cross between Haeckel and Wallace and you could avoid it by staying on the ridge proper, same goes for Haeckel to 13,332.

Thanks! We're not taking crampons or axes; if the snow's soft enough we'll just kick step.

FWIW, here's what Wallace (in back) and Haeckel (behind foreground ridgeline) looked like descending the east face of Darwin on Saturday, 8/27. This is from somewhere above Blue Heaven Lake--too far down to show the Hungry Packer drainage.
