I've been trying to squeeze a climb into a busy schedule for several weeks but have been stopped by uncooperative weather.

Now it's looking like I might have a chance on this coming Monday/Tuesday.

I figure Baldy might be avalanche-prone with the new snow that's forecast.

My question: Is the hike from the San Jacinto tram station to the summit safe right after a storm?

Obviously, my main concern is avalanche danger.

If you do the direct route where you cut across round valley to tamarack and then over that little saddle between tamarack and san jacinto...i think the saddle is the only section you need worry about...even then...it's minimal if any concern. Mostly a snowshoe slog from what I remember.

Should be OK. The slope between Tamarack and the Miller Saddle has a pretty thick cover of chaparrel that helps hold things in place, and its not quite steep enough to create an avy. However, the area got a LOT of snow two weeks ago, and will be getting another decent dump this weekend, so evaluate the slope from down in Tamarack before heading up. Snowshoes are definately the way to go, an AT ski set-up would work if you go up the day after the storm clears out (the snow consolidates pretty quickly up there). Also remember the Tram starts running at 10AM on weekdays, not 8AM like on weekends and holidays (check there website to be sure - pstramway.com).

the snow dump wasn't big last night but it was icy and windy. Definitely bring snow shoes

Apart from people getting lost, it should be fine.

Yeah conditions were interesting once you got up in the wind Saturday. Sunday was beautiful though. Looks like weather is moving in Tuesday again.
