Trail Running the San Gabriels

by tlerunner » Thu Mar 18, 2010 2:21 am

I am from Colorado and am here on business. Went up Mt. Wilson in a 4 hour round trip already and am looking for another good trail run or hike. I am staying in Pasadena.

Thanks!

Unfortunately a lot of trails are trashed right now from the fires. These 2 routes have minimal damage and both are runnable.

Bailey Canyon > Mt Wilson Trail (~7.5 miles, small section on road to return to your car)

Lower Sam Merrill > Echo Mt > Middle Sam Merrill > Inspiration Pt > Castle Canyon > Echo Mt > Lower Sam Merrill (~10 mi)

Thanks, I appreciate it. What is the best map of the area in the second link you suggested?

Actually, the Tom Harrison Mt Wilson map provides more detail for these runs, not that you can't get by with the Front Country one. They should have both at the REI in Arcadia or possibly Distant Lands (travel store) in Pasadena; call first as they're popular and Distance Lands is sometime spotty on topo map coverage. The connector between Bailey Canyon and Mt Wilson trail is less traveled but it's signed. The Sam Merrill one is also signed at every intersection.

Found this online if you don't want to buy a map:

Ended up doing the loop starting from the Cobbs Estate. This was a great run, thanks!
