helmet certifications

by garythenuke » Fri Sep 24, 2010 4:03 pm

I have a quick (or maybe not so quick) question on helmet certifications. Does anyone know how the climbing certification tests compare to those for bike and/or skateboard helmets?

Specifically, top end bike/vert/downhill helmets have the CPSC, ASTM, SNELL certs, or even DOT for downhill skateboarding.

Climbing helmets have the UIAA and CE certs.

How do the sets of certifications compare?
Does anyone know the real numbers?

Thanks for the link. I think I've read that before but forgotten about it. It seems to me that for a fall, skate helmets are superior. But for things falling on you, climbing helmets are superior. So for bouldering and sport climbing maybe skate helmets are the way to go. But for alpine, wall, ice, etc., climbing helmets are the way to go.
You have to decide where the greatest risk is. You falling on something or something falling on you...

Too bad a climbing company can't make one that covers all the bases.
