2000 miles (3000+ kms) on foot

by Scott » Wed Jan 11, 2012 12:51 am

I just finished up our walking diary for 2011 and noticed that our two kids (Kessler and Shaylee; ages 7 & 9) walked almost 2000 miles (3000+ kms) last year. This includes walks to the store, church, school, park, around town and on all of our hikes/climbs.

It sure beats letting them play excessive video games or to veg out in front of the TV or movie theater.

Below, you can see some of the places we walked:

Bottom line... your kids are really lucky.

Way to go, Scott! Every time my kids whine about the hike being too long or the rock being too hard to climb or whatever, I honestly think of your kids and then tell mine to get their sorry butts moving.

I'm looking forward to introducing my oldest to roped climbing this spring, and I hope there will be a window in life where my kids are old enough to do the things I love and want to share with them while I am still young and hardy enough to do them myself.

Keep up the great work.

Scott,

Thanks for posting yet another idea with example.

When I happen upon reports about trips you've done with your kids, it always puts a smile on my face and leaves me inspired. I haven't been keeping stats, but Kelsey (4) has several good hikes under her belt. Her brother, Brendan (2), is starting to move at a pretty good pace, but still loves riding in the pack. They may get to experience calculating mileage around home, as well as tracking progress on SP pages for learning, fun, and motivation in the coming years. We're still in the singing and dancing to Sesame Street stage.

By the way, I made sure to take them to Goblin Valley per your work here on SP. It was a cold, cloudy, windy, and crowded day (around Easter one year), but still good fun!
