Autumn in the Sierra

by Deb » Tue Sep 24, 2013 5:07 am

Aaaaah, it's that time of transitioning weather, change of color, crisp mountain air......I can tell you that Rock Creek got some decent snow that most likely will not disappear significantly anytime soon with this next system rolling up in a couple of day. Get your boots out!

Thanks for the post you both and congrats on Ruby Peak. Planning to be up at Rock Creek on Monday / Tuesday for some quality time. Are the Aspens changing colors yet?

Anita, when I was in Bishop on Sunday it looked like the Whites had a dusting from White Mtn Peak north to Boundary, but it didn't look like much.

Yes, it is melting quickly, but hold your horses - we have a forecast for snow Wed - Thur and very low temps (like close to freezing as a high).
Daria and I ran from Mosquito Flats to Pine Creek today, trail is snow free but the peaks are holding on to it. The eye popping fall colors over Morgan Pass are impressive!

Thank you Deb..I heard about this next storm coming...I guess we will have to wait and see what it brings..we are doing a road trip starting on Oct. 5th..was hoping to do a few things on the East side higher up...may have to stay lower and find things to do..we will work around the weather and still have fun...still may even go Backpacking in Southern Utah....Yes I think the temps are staying cold enough higher to keep that snow..glad you saw some nice color!

Snow was a non-issue out of Piute Pass today. Interesting snow and ice clinging to northern aspects though. Fun pitching rocks onto the lake and watching them bounce on the ice. Cold out there!

I was hoping to have seen more snow, but it was very limited

Deb, what time did you hike in and out of Piute pass? I was up there saturday too checking out fall colors and the approach for Emerson

Looks like fall in Yosemite. Still a tiny bit of snow left on north faces from the storm last week.

There's a dirtbag in this shot somewhere...

We hiked in about 0730 Friday morning and were out by 5PM but we didn't go TO Piute Pass, we took the chute just west of Emerson for approach to Checkered Demon. Very cold out there on Friday!
Saturday, we climbed Basin Mtn and attempted South Basin. Complete different temps! I sweated until I stank going up the east couloir! Even managed to exit via north slope of Basin down to Horton Lakes and out on old miner's road at 9PM in just one layer. Very little snow in that area.
