Gores in early to mid-July

by rwfrenchjr » Sun Jun 19, 2016 12:20 pm

Based on what I can see from the Vail webcams, it looks like there is still a fair amount of snow in the Gore Range. Has anyone been in recently that can report on snow/ice conditions? We are wondering if we will need to pack microspikes (or more) for a trip in mid-July. Day hikes only, but planning a Mt. Powell excursion and wondering about Kneeknocker Pass and the ascent of Powell's east face.
Thanks!

I would bring crampons and, at bare minimum, an axe just to be safe. The east side of Kneeknocker will hold snow well into the summer. In mid-July a couple of years ago the west side was completely dry but I was glad to have crampons for the east side. So you won't know until you crest the pass and that's a lot of effort to get there just to be turned around due to not being prepared.
