Did my first 50 miler yesterday as part of the 24 hours of Boulder in a sub 10 hour time. IT band issue kept me from pushing it to 100k. It was a beautiful Colorado day for a run.

I was out there pacing a friend from 11pm to 5am. You were probably done by that point though... sub-10 hours would have put you out of there by 7pm or so.

anybody here run in college?

I run for NM Highlands in the RMAC(w/ adams state, western state, mines, etc) we got title IX'd so we only have men's xc, no track, which isn't really all that bad, you have december to july to do whatever other sport you want(climbing, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing).

A new year is here and so is a new running (aka mountain climbing cross conditioning) season. I'm aiming for Moab's Ret Hot 50k+ (http://www.mas50.com/redhot/) in Feb for my first event. Anyone else going? Cheers!

I'm constantly running during the sumer and fall. My mom was in the Olympic trials for a bunch of events and she is the cross country coach at my middle school. I run all the time. But I don't run to get in shape. I kinda just don't think about it and run. and i'm fast 8) 559 minute mile average for two miles :D

I started training for mountaineering just about a month ago and it feels great. I run 4.5miles 4 time a week and already feel myself running much faster, the only downside is that it is really killing my knees. (and Im only 15..)

"ULTRA - Ultrarunning

ULTRA is a list dedicated to the sport of ultrarunning. By "ultrarunning" we mean running of a distance longer than a marathon in distance or time as well as shorter specialty races such as Escarpment, Pikes Peak ascent and Mt. Washington. The list will concentrate on matters related to ultrarunning. However, we recognize that the members of the ultrarunning community cover a wide spectrum. Some are interested solely in training and racing information, techniques and experiences. Others enjoy the more 'peripheral' areas of the sport, from ultra prose or poetry to descriptions of interesting people or scenery seen during a run or race. All those people, and all those ultra topics and many others, are welcome here."

Good resource, but I got tired of the number of emails even with the digest option selected. Not sure if they've changed things since I left the list a few years back.

Also be sure to use running shoes no more than 400 or 500 miles max and then replace. You might not notice the subtle, gradual change, but all shoes deteriorate, even the expensive ones. You shouldn't have knee issues as long as you build your weekly mileage gradually, you don't heel strike, you rotate your shoes out regularly, and you try to run on soft surfaces (like grass or trails). I'm in my 40s and often average 70 or 80 miles a week, and so far {{knock on wood}} haven't had knee problems... but I'm careful to rotate shoes and run on soft surfaces as much as possible. Hope this is helpful.

If the knee pain is anterior (in the front), try doing exercises to strengthen your quadradeps, including leg presses and/or squats.

The Mayo clinic has a good summary of potential causes of knee pain. My guess given that you're young and likely a new runner is either patellar chondromalacia or illiotibial band syndrome (ITBS).

I was an avid runner in my teens and twenties. I too experienced knee pain that seemed to be a result of muscle imbalance. How strong are your hamstring muscles? My hamstrings were much much weaker than my quadriceps muscles. Strengthening my hamstrings helped my knees feel more stable and strong. Still does.

I don't know how long you've been running, since you say you've been training for mountaineering for a month. If you've only been running for a month, perhaps you need to cut back on the mileage or frequency a little bit until your body adapts to this new activity. Pushing yourself to improve your fitness is important, but the gains made from pushing yourself occur when you're resting. Hope this helps...and makes sense!

Can anyone recommend an orthopedic hip specialist in Dallas/Fort Worth area? I'd like to find a sports doc who is used to seeing relatively young, active hips and not a pure hip replacement specialist.

I've been running for 2 years, training and half marathons, and have developed discomfort in my left hip. It feels like something is out of place and after a run I have a catch in my hip when I swing my leg forward as I walk. It started a couple weeks ago after my tempo run. I saw the chiropractor because it felt like an alignment issue (and I hadn't been in in several months) and it seemed to help. I did my long run and a couple of easy runs with no problems. On Friday (today is Monday) I did speedwork and the hip tightened up through the day and developed the catch. I've laid off the running since Friday and the pain has subsided but the hip still does not feel right and I develop the catch after walking or being on my feet for some time. I've already reduced my weekly mileage from ~25 per week to ~16 per week pre-injury beacuse I took a couple weeks off. Easy runs don't seem to bother it, only the tempo and speedwork.

4.5 miles 4 times a week is too much for someone who only start training for 1 month.

Possibly. Something else to consider for fortybelow...dude your growing  I think I shot up 8-10 inches in height between ages 14 and 18. That can also put stress on your joints. But I started running at 14 and was running more than 4.5 a day after building up to it. Good luck and listen to your body.

I am new to running. It helps me reduce stress in this uncertain economy. Before June 08, I had a negative attitude about running. Since then I have posted three 5k times of: 27:01,26:20 and 25:03. I am now capable of 15 miles without stopping. Seeing progress keeps me on track with my running, but my main goal is to return to Mount Hood and summit. Building endurance may not be the solution for the summit attempt but it probably won't hurt. Especially when you happen to live at sea level.

I've been running for fitness off & on for the past 34 years (I'm 51). Typically I run every other morning, between 3 and 5 miles. Two summers ago I built up my distance and ran the San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon. I have also done some occasional mountain bike riding over the past 20 years. Then last summer I dusted off my old road bike and joined some friends for a few 30 mile Sunday rides. After bike riding I started feeling some soreness in my knees. Not what I would call pain but more like discomfort. My knees also started making grinding & popping noises. According to conventional wisdom cycling is lower impact and easier on the knees, right? So I backed off the cycling but kept up the running and my knees started feeling better. I might be some freak of nature that is better off running than cycling.

Being concerned that I my blow out a knee while carrying a 60 lb. pack, 10 miles deep into the backcountry, I decided to get checked out by an Orthopedist. After x-rays and MRI's the doc told me yesterday that there is some scaring but no real damage and that I should go ahead and "live my life". The doc also recommended some quad strengthening exercises. Good news for me, no surgery for now!
