Re: In the Bay area for a week, looking for a climb

Last year in May a friend brought a Lamina 35 to Hidden Valley @9800 ft and said it was warm enough (OK, he is Canadian). If I would go mid July I would hope that a true 15F bag is not necessary, but a bag like that would probably cover most deviations of the temperature from normal.

Re: French Alpine grading to YDS

From my understanding, I don't think you can convert them. FAG is more an overall grade for a route which can have a different YDS rock rating, ice climbing rating, roman literal length rating, and aid climbing. Your question is comparable to the question on how to convert an SAT score to a letter g...

Re: In the Bay area for a week, looking for a climb

we descended the route on Memorial Day, there was almost no snow. The first third of the chute has suncupped snow, but we could avoid it by staying climber's right of it. This is how Iceberg Lake and the start of MR (the chute next the the ridge we are on) looked from East Buttress: http://farm8.sta...

Whitney conditions, found sleeping pad, NF Lone Pine Creek

We found a sleeping pad just below Upper Boy Scout Lake. It was clearly not left on purpose. If it's yours, send me a message so we can arrange for return and say thank you for the additional padding for two nights. Conditions: - Crampons/ice axe wasn't necessary to descent MR, only the first third ...

Re: Whitney: Water availability Upper Boy Scout Lake

Upper Boy Scout Lake was completely melted last weekend. It seemed that there is also water at Iceberg Lake, we saw blue patches at the sides from the East Buttress. Other conditions: - Crampons/ice axe wasn't necessary to descent MR - East Buttress almost completely free of snow. - Friends on East ...

Whitney: Water availability Upper Boy Scout Lake

Hi,

I already asked in the Whitney forum, but couldn't get an answer to this: Does anybody know if there is liquid water at Upper Boy Scout Lake? From pictures I got the impression that the lake is still frozen, but maybe the streams are running?

Thanks,

Norbert

Re: Lost tent stakes on Casaval Ridge, Shasta

Nice pictures, we also ran into these guys. Our camp was a little bit higher up... probably about where you were standing when taking the picture.

Re: Hotlum-Bolam in late May

North Gate: Call the rangers. I did a week ago and she strongly assumed that the road will be open by then.

Re: Lost tent stakes on Casaval Ridge, Shasta

I only saw a tent slowly rolling down from Helen Lake on Saturday evening from our camp on the ridge at 10.5k, but no bag with stakes.

Re: Looking for Trail GPX Waypoints

I didn't know that you could create waypoints with caltopo. How does that work exactly? I tried right-click, but that offers only measuremnts.

Torres del Paine NP, French Valley

I'm looking for some easy climbs/scrables out of the French Valley in Torres del Paine NP (or other areas on the W). I don't want to bring gear, so a nice class 3 or 4 ridge would be perfect. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Suggestions for Fall/Winter mountaineering

Thanks for the suggestions, Freel sounds fun. We ended up going to Yosemite, the weather was perfect.

And yes, it's a long drive over Tahoe or Bakersfield, but that's just how it is. Did Lassen a couple of times and also the accessible routes on Shasta.
