A lot of guys will carry a .44 Magnum specifically for bears. You aren't going to need one against a Douglas squirrel.

Many, many people, and not just gun nuts, misunderstand the threat posed by bears in California, so those that are so inclined will carry guns in case they run into one. A .44 Magnum would be effective against a black bear (as the article indicates).

Ironically, for defense against the only bear in the lower 48 that is actually a significant threat, the brown bear, no handgun would be reliably effective and you would have to carry a rifle or a shotgun loaded with deer slugs instead. What a hassle.

BEAR pepper spray is supposed to be pretty effective, but from what I hear actual firearms are safer to have around.

My former boss has used pepper spray on Alaskan brown bears with success. Get the big cans with a minimum 30' range.

Actually they do! A friend of mine is from MT and they have used it! The bear spray goes off like a freakin' bomb and you'll be crying as well but it did deter the grizzly! If you don't have a proper caliber fire arm, you might just piss off the bear and make things worse.

I found a canister of that stuff while backpacking in the middle of freaking nowhere Alaska with my wife (!). I picked it up so as to remove litter from the back country and discharged it downwind so that I wouldn't have to carry the extra weight for the next 4 days - we had our own. That shit is bright orange and you aren't even kidding when you say it goes off like a bomb! It is scary just to look at.

Back on topic, that dude is a effing douche bag. I hope he gets what's coming to him.

Yeah, BEAR pepper spray.

Not the shit you see at the checkout at gun stores.

You set that thing off inside a car and it might be the last thing you ever do.

I still have one sitting in my garage as well. I found it somewhere in the Sierra I believe.
