Thread Deleted?

by LesterLong » Tue Oct 16, 2012 6:41 pm

I had a thread deleted regarding websites of mountains by grade. I believe it was because of some spam, but was hoping that entire threads don't get deleted for such things.

Since I contributed to the above thread, I was looking for other people to chime in on this, only to find the whole thing deleted. What was the reason for the deletion? The OP asked reasonable questions that were answered (IMO) in reasonable way by several people. What good does the deletion of the whole thread do? Delete the unwanted post and keep this and other threads like it going...

BTW I care what new members like Lester might think of a site that removes their posts and does not even tell them. People in power on SP, this is not the way to do it!!!

Absolutely! He should have at least gotten a PM form the elf who deleted it explaining the reason for taking the action.

See the last entry in http://www.summitpost.org/phpBB3/people-needing-deletion-t37750-165.html.

Still, the person who started the thread should have been notified.

Click on "Inbox" and send a PM to the elves stating just that.

Hey elves, I'm glad you trust my keen powers of spam-detection, but I kinda assumed you would read the thread before nuking the whole thing.

Elving is a hard job, I'm glad somebody is doing it (who isn't me). Sorry to make it a little harder.

I didn't delete the thread (I had posted in it, too) and was surprised to see it gone when I looked for it today, but I suspect the above is what happened, that there was an assumption that the thread itself was spam. An honest mistake, I think.

To the OP: I don't see any reason for not posting your question again, and I hope that asmrz and Fred Spicker, who made really good posts in response to your question, will repost what they did if it isn't too much trouble.

It's always a good idea to look before you nuke. 8)

So do I, Josh, so let me man up and publicly apologize to you. Just today, we installed a mass deletion tool. While testing it, I apparently misunderstood some feature of it and deleted all your trip reports.

I am really, really sorry.

Now if it was all my photos, I would have been really outraged!

At least I keep a copy of most of my trip reports on my personal website. But if it was for my photos, it would mess up pretty much all my trip reports ever! :o

My fault - sorry. I was under the impression that the thread had been posted by the spammer but obviously it wasn't. Can't really claim I was distracted by something else either. Maybe I can blame my poor eyesight?

Or will I have to do this from now on?
