first of three 6000 footers for the day
Taking the AT to the shelter from Carver's Gap was a pretty gentle climb. The attic area for the shelter was something I haven't seen very often.

Peaceful summit
There's no way that I could have walked right by it and skipped the short side trip to this peaceful summit. I loved the summit Boulder and the thick for trees on top. We enjoyed some lunch on the summit before continuing our treck.

Missed it on the way out...
...to Roan High Bluff, because I thought the Knob was farther down the AT than the spur trail leading to the shelter. Turns out it's right next to the shelter, as my friend and I discovered when we snagged it on our way back. Lots of ambient water that day (puddles, streams, mist), but the trail from the Knob to Carver's Gap was so well-maintained that we barely noticed it.
A quick stroll to the summit knob. On the way up I met a thru hiker who was pissed that he had missed the top, and he kept going on about how there was no sign or trail. After that I kept a close eye to see where I needed to leave the trail, and wouldn't you know there is a VERY clear trail and sign for the shelter. I'm not really sure what the hiker was talking about

Beautiful day
Hiked to all the Roans above 6,000 feet in one day. Started at Carver's Gap and hiked to Roan High Knob, then it was on to Roan High Bluff before backtracking across Carver's Gap and heading over to Grassy Ridge Bald.

Spooky climb
Started up this thing in the early morning hours under heavy fog. Walking through the woods was pretty freaky with no noise whatsoever and not much light to see by.

Appalachian Trail
An inch of snow fell on my tent overnight while I slept. The wind was howling. Kind of a daunting place to spend a cold, snowy night.

Not bad... little bit of ice on the trail. We didn't see anyone else on Roan High Knob though there was a fair number of people just north on the balds.
