Piz Cam is a mountain rising from Val Bregaglia, above village Vicosoprano. It isn`t a big mountain, but from summit we have very interesting view to beautiful Val Bregaglia and famous summits: Piz Badile and Cengalo. Its situated in south end of Platta Group, surrounded by valleys: from south - Val Bregaglia, north - west - Val da Cam. From val Bregaglia its big vertical drop, about 1600 meters of height difference. South and east slopes are steep and rocky, western slopes are mostly grassy. Piz Cam has short ridges toward west and south - east, nothern ridge is long, more than 1 km. In valleys there`s many marmots.
The only way to get here is road to Val Bregaglia - from Italy - via Chiavenna or Switzerland - down from Maloja Pass.
There`s no marked trail leading to the summit of Piz Cam. Trails in these areas are leading to many passes. We have two options, both from Vicosoprano. First from campsite toward small settlement Roticcio, then through forest to Nambrun. We can also get there by paved road - 1611 m a s l. Next through mountain pasteures - Alp Furcela and to pass Above Val Furcela. Second path is from Vicosoprano to Plan Lo and Lej da Cam (Lej its meaning Lake). This option is less picturesque, more steep ascend. From Val di Cam or Pass above Val Furcela we must go through western grassy slopes, without a path, but in dry conditions - no problem. When we reach the ridge, straight to the end of it. Last part is a easy scrambling. For me is was about 4-5 hours of ascend and 4 hours descend.
No specials restrictions in this area, neighboring Val Bondasca is closed to touristic traffic, beacause of big danger of landslide. The paths around Piz Cam aren`t marked well. We must check our position with map or GPS (beware - prices for data transmission in Switzerland are absurdly high!), to no get lost.
All year long, but of course, danger of avalanche in winter part of year.
One of the nicest campsites in Alps, where I slept, in Vicosoprano.
