A Prep Hike in 1970!

On a Prep Hike for a 7 Day AT Hike in 1970 Yes, that's me facing the camera. I was working at a summer camp, trying to get junior high age girls ready for seven days on the AT in the hot summer. Back then we had to hike in uniform and there were lots of very strict rules about how much weight kids could carry (but no max for adults!) We used the big scales in the camp kitchen; the kind they put slabs of frozen meat on etc. and we would weigh each kid and each pack and redistribute the group gear. Those really skinny girls did us in every time! Thank goodness we still could cook over campfires and heat our water in #10 cans!

Serious question ...

Were there some folks who were vegetarians
back then, or did everybody secretly eat
meat when they returned home to their
backyard barbecue ??? ?

Re: Serious question ...

You know I can't remember a single vegetarian anywhere in my life in the 60s or even the early 70s. I went to college with some guys who lived on beer but no vegetarians that I remember....

Re: Serious question ...

That's funny.

In today's hectic Society, everybody
claims to be a vegetarian just for the hell
of it - or perhaps for some attention.

I blame everything on the quality of
drinking water.

It causes people to make claims that are not
always true; but then, nobody's PERFECT.

Re: Serious question ...

I have a funny story about this from our 10 day canoe trip in 2002 with the guys. We ordered freeze-dried vegetarian meals for our Hindu Scout on that trip and his food was the best of all!

Since each packet was meant for four but actually served only 2 hearty teenage boys we had the kids draw lots each meal to see who would share his breakfasts and lunches. They were that good!

Re: Serious question ...

Now, that's brilliant thinking ! !

BUT.. do you remember the brand?

I had some bad luck with Mountain Home.
Back in the 1980s, I received a surprise visit from my brother. We decided to do
an overnight jaunt on the NW side of Mount
Rainier National Park.

Traveling light, we tasted the freeze-dried
spaghetti the first night. My brother went
running into the bush with a grimace and scowl on his pale-looking face.

Ever since then, I packed a submarine
sandwich with me, in honor of the Beatles
hit tune "Yellow Submarine."

Re: Serious question ...

Larry, as they say, 'been there, done that' but not with spaghetti from Mountain Home. I'm sure that was not fun with either of you!

Re: Serious question ...

You're right, as usual ..

At least we were blessed with the
memorable North Face of Rainier.
