Bald Mountain is a ranked peak with 661 feet of prominence. It sits along the I-25 corridor, between Denver and Colorado Springs, several miles to the east of the main Rampart Range. From many parts of Colorado Springs, Bald Mountain prominently stands out due to its isolation from the main range. Its location allows a nice panoramic view of the entire Rampart Range. The nearest town is Monument, about 4 miles to the south west, which offers a variety of restaurants and shopping. Due to access issues on private land, Bald Mountain's only reasonable route is via its east ridge.
Getting ThereFrom interstate I-25 take exit 165, Monument/Palmer Lake and turn east on County Line Road. Continue for about three miles and make a left on Furrow Road. Park near the well marked Ponderosa Conference Center, or with their permission park at the picnic area near the pavilion inside their grounds.
RouteFrom the north west corner of the Ponderosa Conference Center a short and rough trail (class 2) climbs steeply up the slope to the eastern end of Bald Mountain's one mile long east-west ridge. From the ridge, an established trail continues west above the small cliff bands to the south. The trail continues a short distance to a communications antenna array at an eastern point of Bald Mountain. The maintained trail ends here; from this point game trails drop down slightly to a saddle and then continue up westward. Stay to the right (north) of the crest to avoid some serious bushwhacking through very dense scrub oak. A scratch trail will take you to a high point with a cairn. This appears to be the summit, but is not. The true summit is still hidden by trees and is about another 0.1 mile further west. Round trip distance is about 2.5 miles with an elevation gain of just under 500 feet.
Red TapeThe entire south, west and north slopes of Bald Mountain are fenced and posted as private land. The Ponderosa Conference Center, on the eastern terminus of Bald Mountain is the best point of access. With their busy summer events schedule it is advisable to ask permission to park at their facility. An alternative is parking on Furrow Drive near the Fire Dept about 0.1 mile north of the conference center.
When to ClimbBald Mountain can be climbed any time of the year. In heavy snow years the peak holds deep snow well into Spring and flotation gear would be helpful.
