Untitled CommentNice page Matthew. This one ranks #47 on the Nevada prominence peak list as notedHERE
This one brings up a link to the peak. Nice maps and pics.

Untitled CommentThanks! I figured it had to be ranked as pretty prominent by that metric, but hadn't seen that particular list.

Untitled CommentExcellent page. I like Nevada. Outside the Rubies, Snakes, Springs, none of the mountains are crowded (but I haven't been to the ones around Reno). Nice job.

Untitled CommentIn due course, unless I can guilt you into doing it first. I'm starting on the Eastern Sierra logistical page...

Untitled CommentOh, you are the man! That is a much better one. I was going to suggest you post to the CA thread to solicit input once you put up the basic page. That way you can get 20 hands hunting up relevant links to their favorite haunts and resources.

Untitled CommentThumbs up for number 47! I'm amazed that you Americans keep statistics on everything.

Any guidebooks you could add?

Untitled CommentThanks for the vote. I don't know of any guidebooks that cover this.

Untitled CommentRadek, there is a reference made to Granite Peak (p. 363 )in the Sierra Club totebook, "Hiking the Great Basin" by John Hart. The reference is limited and not of much value. Matt's directions are the best thing I've seen.
I have seen nothing anywhere else that mentions this part of the state so there is plenty of opportunity for some future guidebook writer to develop something. : )

Untitled CommentGreat post, Matthew! I see you found this old-school deer-hunting paradise... So how do you like desert peaks so far?

Untitled CommentI loved them--I had a blast just hitting half a dozen or so over the three days I was out last time, and I came home regretting not having headed out there before. I'll definitely have to head back for King Lear, the other Granite, Star etc. in the fall...

Untitled CommentI really want to climb this mountain. I've been to Gerlach, and Granite Peak looked really cool.

marmots on Granite Pk (Gerlach area)?Has anyone who climbed Granite Peak seen a yellow-bellied marmot near the peak? The reason I ask is that I am doing a study in which I am re-surveying sites formerly surveyed by the late E. R. Hall (who wrote the Mammals of Nevada) during the early 20th century. In his records for August 2, 1936, Hall states that one of his assistants found marmot scats near the peak. Unfortunately, I have not had a chance to climb the peak. Any information you have on marmots in the Granite Range (the one north of Gerlach) would be greatly appreciated. -Chris
PS In fact, I am interested in any marmot observations from the Gerlach area. Thanks!
