Winds got worse in freezing temperatures as the day went on and most parties turned around at the base of Misery Hill, but I was happy to squeak out a successful summit (with my frozen burrito lunch).
There weren't any clouds to be seen... everything in the sky here is wind blown snow. This was near the top of Green Butte Ridge on Mount Shasta at 12,400 feet. Photo of me here has been taken by my esteemed partner ElGreco in April 2012. Comments[ Post a Comment ] | Marcsoltan | Holy... | |

Hasn't voted | It WAS intense. Above 13,000 feet the wind was pretty wicked... had to curl up and lay down to rest. And honestly there is still a little numbness in a couple of my fingertips 3 months later!!
Really like this photo... my favorite of the year. | | Posted Jul 11, 2012 1:13 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Bunch of B.S. - creativity and humor never
hurt anybody ...
But seriously, welcome back, man ..
"Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out ..
Welcome back, to that same old place that you laughed about.
Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around ..."

Hasn't voted | Thanks Chris! And absolutely yes I have had some good trips! This was a superb one- probably my favorite trip this year so far, but credit goes to my partner here. This is a shot he took and he had a lot of other good ones on this outing too. I was happy to get some good action shots. | | Posted Jul 12, 2012 4:16 pm |

Voted 10/10 | I can't think of a greater experience than to just stand out there with your hood up and back to the wind, letting nature hammer you. That makes me feel so alive. | | Posted Jul 12, 2012 12:12 pm |

Hasn't voted | You betcha Ray! I agree completely. And I was lucky that above 13000 feet the wind was mostly at my back, otherwise I wouldn't have made it. It picked up over the next hour and coming down against it was a battle even with gravity helping me out. | | Posted Jul 12, 2012 4:17 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Reminds me of my most memorable mountain experience. Went up alone in the Apennines, Italy. About 8,000ft, stood out on the col with a humungous storm wind at my back.
Wind came in buffeting shock waves hammered my jacket into my back, then sent ripples across it. The wind sucked the air out of my mouth when I opened it.
Snow pickup at my feet streaked across the surface at blinding speed that I felt like I was standing in a raging river.
I began laughing with joy. And I just stayed there, keeping warm enough to endure it. So awesome. Man.

Voted 10/10 | I was stuck in a monsoon storm (once) with monstrous waves whipping 'gainst the sides of my canoe, bringing in tons of water ..
Had to ditch the canoe until the storm played out. More scary than looking into the
hairy armpits of Poseidon ... it was.

Hasn't voted | Very cool shot Ray. It was very something similar on the top of this route, as the wind was funneled between the east and west summits. But I was just a bit too cold to laugh with joy, though I did enjoy it overall (a good while afterwards). Managed a cool video of the snow 'river', but your shot is much better than mine of the area. Very cool lighting in yours! | | Posted Jul 13, 2012 5:09 pm |

Voted 10/10 | Another one just came to mind. Was in the Scottish Cairngorms, since a 30 years interval as a youth.
Returning, again snowbound, had the same tumult ascending Cairngorm. Cloud and spinning snow everywhere. On the ridge, battled to stand up. Disappointed to not look once more across the Larig Ghru (huge glacially formed U-valley - where we had an epic winter week), the sun burst through, giving a gold-lit minute of where we trekked as youths. Awesome gift. | | Posted Jul 14, 2012 1:42 pm |

Hasn't voted | Thanks TimB! Appreciate it! Yeah it was a really awesome trip. Pretty mellow most of the time, but it got interesting above 13000 feet as wind picked up and any shelter was left below. | | Posted Jul 18, 2012 12:27 pm |
