Hi!

Hi!

On the evening of November 13 an anonymous SP moderator banned my SummitPost account from posting in the forums. There was no explanation provided, no reason given, no warning. Not even a PM stating that it had occurred or any explanation whatsoever. They remain anonymous and have not given me any reasoning whatsoever. They also acted alone without consulting the other moderators. Up until this point I have been working on good terms with the moderators, both to help build the site content and think of ways to make it better. We had also been cooperating in terms of forum activity. It seems that at least one of them remains determined to take it in a different direction. EDIT (Nov 16): Two days after I was banned, one of the SP moderators came forward and explained the reason why as he understood it, though I had figured it out by that point (by searching threads for deleted posts). I appreciated the response. I wasn't surprised he communicated since I have had cooperative interactions with him several times over the past few months. He clearly wasn't the moderator who banned me. I would like to communicate the details to you all publicly, but fear that if I do this will be deleted. Feel free to contact me privately. The moderator who banned me still has not spoken up or communicated why he thought this was the best approach. Several of the moderators who have interacted with me in the past likely would have taken different steps, and a simple PM would have accomplished the objective both more respectfully and more straightforwardly. I am fairly certain I've determined who took the action, as several have come forward and stated it wasn't them. I think (hope) there is some realization amonst most of them that there are more optimal ways. I've sent the moderator who banned me a PM asking him for his input and to try to have a channel of communication, and I have confirmed he has seen it. Still, it was promptly ignored. No response. By the way, there was one other member that was banned, and I have also not been told how long I will be banned for. Again... I do appreciate the responses several of you have made both publicly and privately. EDIT (Nov 28): I was unbanned after a week, as was the other SP member, but have been fairly inactive since, and will likely be a while before I become quite as active again. It just isn't worth it while things are being handled in this manner. The reasons I was given for being banned were bringing things from other websites onto SP (though I have not done that and I am not on the other website the moderators were referring to) and for making a comment with respect to a particular SP member. The mods specifically stated my comments were appropriate if they had participated in the thread, but not otherwise. The issue there, however, was that they had been participating in the thread since the first page. It probably is not a coincidence that the SP member is friends with Bob Burd, who is the moderator who banned me. Here is the thread

Re: LOL

It is unfortunate Vitaliy M.

At first I thought it was dadndave who did this, as he was online at the time, but there were 2 hidden users and dadndave seemed unaware of it when he conversed with me earlier today.

It appears this mod has hauled off and done this unilaterally, and now I am stuck with the consequences of his ill-conceived actions. And he will not even own up to it and say who he is, and still hasn't even explained why he did it without a warning, or why he did it at all.

I've put too many hours into this site recently, both submitting content and working in good faith with the mods to improve both the forums and especially overall site content and functionality (with the select few of the mods who care about that sort of thing). We had been cooperating on all levels.

It is really sad that this is what they think is appropriate for those who contribute.

Re: LOL

I had a similar experience on "mbPost.com," SP's sister site.

I was banned from the forums for three days,
without any warning or any reason given.
No apology was given after I was let back on.

Chad, maybe you should wait a few days to
see if they let you back on.

Then again, it would only be FAIR for them to give you an explanation. Best of luck.

Re: LOL

Don't know, but they never "owned up" to it.

Every banning should come with an explanation,
at least in my most humble and unabashed opinion.

Re: LOL

That is absolutely ridiculous Larry. For you to be banned is outrageous, and I certainly agree they should own up to it, in all cases. They should state their reasons immediately. It doesn't take days or even hours to put something like that together.

The objective of those running the site should be simply to encourage participation and help develop positive contributions of site content.

Thank you for your comments here.

Re: LOL

So did they ban you or delete your forum account (like they did to me, without any warning as well)? Because if it was a ban, the other mods can lift it right?
It is true that you worked to improve content here, and at least some respect in form of explonation would be nice...seems like someone really hates you.

Re: LOL

They banned me. It can be undone. To have deleted my forum account, or really any user's forum account, is beyond reasonable. Mistakes can be made, and you can alway leave a ban in place long term if that is the approprate thing to do.

I've spent 100s of hours contributing content, and working with others on their contributions. I really like a lot of people here and I try to be a benfit to them, but that's starting to become more challenging than it should be.

The lack of explanation and anonymity around this is what really makes this an issue for me especially after I had been working with some of them to improve content thoughout the site.

Re: LOL

This next quote I'm about to say does not pertain to the current elves who have been very good to me, but this reminds me of back in the day of what I would say. "Only an Elf Deals an absolute". This was back in the day where I was banned without warning. Ever since I watched my back. But no explanation... lame! I do admit from time to time I do see a little bit of tension in some of your posts. Perhaps that might have been part of the reason?

Re: LOL

I'd agree that the handling of this is the biggest issue at the moment. I've PM'd the mods about this a couple times, and the only response I have gotten was one from dadndave stating that it wasn't him (I had assumed it was) and he wasn't aware of what had happened. Whoever took action failed to even take 2 minutes to state why they did it. Just silence.

True I can take a solid stance in the forums. I try to spice things up a little and make it interesting. But I mostly limit those types of posts to people I know. Also when concerns have been raised I have been very responsive. Difficult to do when there is a communication gap though.

Unfortunate

Seems umpteen people have left SP over the years because of conflicts with other users. One would think or perhaps just hope that the people behind the scenes were the most reasonable and interested in the site's welfare. Perhaps other skills or motives trump such ideals. Alienating remaining people who are actually trying to help out with their own time seems counter-productive to me.

Re: Unfortunate

I would hope that too Baarb, but I do not think it. There are absolutely some that are very dedicated to helping the site, and I have gotten along with them recently despite past differences with some. But others seem to have other motives. I cannot think of any other justification for how this is currently being handled.

Just my opinion

I don't think you are helping yourself with this course you're taking. I think you are digging your own hole......and I will say this again and I know the Mods are against it but if the SPer is fine with having the reasons for being banned posted, they should be. Once again, just my opinion.

Re: Just my opinion

Helping myself? What do you think my objective is?

If you read my comments carefully, you should see that my objective here is not to focus on helping myself. Rather it is to raise the issue over how the communication is handled.

Nevermind that there was no communication for the reasons to others on SP, as you suggest, but there was not even any communication to me about the reasons, or even an acknowledgement that I was banned from the person who did it.

surreal

If you'd been really banned without a word of explanation and no one answers your PM's, that's just outrageous. No offence meant but it's kinda like a stereotypical woman with PMS, like 'you should damn well know why I'm pissed off with you'...
cheers
