laynewilsonBeen up 3 routes  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 12, 2007

I climbed this peak for the 5th time on August 10, 2007. This time we started at the Cherry Canyon logging trail starting at the new Orson Hyde trail head at 0800. It took us about 4.5 to get to outlaw cabin, and about another 2.5 to get on top of the summit. This is a very long route, but very scenic. I do not recommend doing this hike alone. During the hot summer months, I recommend taking at least 1.5 gallons of liquid with you because there is only one spring on the mountain if you do the bear canyon route. I usually will freeze 3 32oz bottles of Poweraid, and take 3 more 32 oz bottles and water in my pack and work them through the day. I can’t emphasis enough, take plenty of water. I have been on this mountain 5 times from different routes and it always is a mountain that deserves care and respect. The final approach to the summit is very technical and tricky and not for the faint of heart. It is a project to climb this mountain from any route, but you will be glad you did. The views are spectacular. Coming off the mountain, we thought we were in the wrong canyon, but fortunately with good maps, land nav skills and a GPS locator, we got back on track. It got dark on us. We went back down the bear canyon trail, and the view of the valley was wonderful. On the way down, we met several night hikers coming up. We finally got back to the vehicle about midnight. Lone Peak is one of my favorite hikes because of its views, difficulty to access, and unique summit.

It is now December 7, 2010 and I would like to do this one again in July or August of 2011. Bo be in shape for this is a blessing.

Here is my 2004 Log.

I have summited this peak 4 times and attempted 5 different times. The first time I went up, I learned a valuable lesson, and that is to carry enough water. 4 of the 5 times, I have taken the Jacob's ladder trail. It is an unrelentless accent and a rocky scramble to the top. The peak is very exposed in some areas near the top. The Summit is about the size a large kitchen table. The view is spectacular. I want to return to this summit again this year and pay tribute to my friends Trent & Lexy Pabst whom were killed by lightning two years ago. I worked at the same place they did and it was sad and shocking to see them go so suddenly. I want to get back to the top of this summit and remember them again. This summit is also approachable from the Alpine side. This approach is somewhat shorter, but the same type of hike. Very rugged, but the view is well worth the climb.

MoonerUp I Go

07/20/09---- via Cherry Canyon Logging Trail
10/16/10---- via Bells Canyon part of Hematoma Quad.
4/23/11----- via Big Willow...Almost... Came within 32 vertical feet of the summit, but the big bad rock was heavily corniced. We turned around
5/5/11------ via the NE Face. Came up Bells and down Willow with Utah Outsiders
02/04/12---- via Cherry Canyon Logging Trail w/ the Wasatch Mountain club. Started @ 6:15, Top at 12:57 (30 mins spent on the ridge) Left the Top at 13:08. Back to the car at 16:20.
06/28-30/12----- Hiked into the Cirque via Jacob's Ladder. 6/29 Climbed to the summit via Open Book (5.7) lead pitch 2&4. 6/30 Climbed the Lowe Route (5.8) on Question Mark Wall lead pitch 1&3, then traverse over to the south and main summit.
08/04/13 via Jacob's Ladder. Climbed Center Thumb, Lowe Route and Triple Overhangs
00/00/14 Hiked to the Cirque with Natasha camped and proposed
07/11-12/14 Hiked into the Cirque and climbed the Lowe Route with Natasha the next day. Natasha said she didn't want to go the true summit so I was a good husband and descended with her but I'm going to claim a summit because I earned the vert after she separated from me on the way out and got lost because she didn't want to go down Jacob's Ladder, So I hike back up Jacob's and found her adding an extra 3500 ft to my day.

2nd Attempt, almost as disastrous as the first although we summitted this time! Very warm day for October. Such a cool mountain. We ran/scrambled up from Jacob's ladder in 2 1/2 hours. Getting down was another story as we wanted to go down the Bear Canyon route---somehow we missed it (to the North) and after 3 hours of bushwacking and downclimbing some crazy crap we finally ended up in Sandy (Saw Mill trail) at a Bonneville Shoreline Trailhead. The others had had enough so Danny Moody and I (Golden) ran back on the BST to the car we had in Draper at the Orson Smith Trailhead. Pretty awesome but I would love to actually have a successfully planned trip on this mountain! If anyone knows exactly what Canyon we came down to come out at the "Saw Mill Trail" I'd love to know---please contact me.

Long hike from the American Fork side. Really beautiful. Climbed Vertical Smile 5.10a with friends to the summit! Even though the hike is a brute the basin at the top is incredible.

Summitted Lone Peak on a perfect Saturday afternoon. The weather was 76?F at 5:30 am when we began via Jacob's Ladder, and I feared that it would be a hot one. However clouds kept us cool throughout the hike and at the summit, I was neither hot nor cold. It was a beautiful day. I double fisted a water bottle and gatorade to make sure that I had plenty of liquid. The Gatorade was a sweet reward at the summit, and I gave half my water to Davy Crockett, a.k.a. "self-pronounced ultra marathoner". So thanks Davy for not bringing enough for yourself to help me lighten my load. I also still had a half-bladder full of water in my camelbak upon completion, so clearly, if the weather cooperates, I won't need to double fist for bloody knuckles on the rock scrambling the next time.

What a great day for Lone Peak! We were so glad that we hit the trailhead around 530am, and while Jacob's Ladder is hideous, it definitely seems to be the fastest route. We made it up to the summit and back in just under 8 hours. The last 1/4 mile of rock scrambling to the top was my favorite part. We had the summit to ourselves for about half an hour. The views were amazing! It'll be a hike I'll do again, but next time I'd like to try to climb Lone Peak via Bells Canyon.

Had a great time. Jacob's ladder lived up to it's reputation and the summit ridge too. I love the adrenalin at the top! Will definitely do this again.

Quite a lovely hike up Jacobs Ladder approach. Took the hike pretty slow but made it to the summit at around 2:00pm. Going down through Little/Big Willow may have been a mistake (more bushwhacking than expected), but overall a splendid trip. Glad to finally make it -- this mountain has taunted me for many years. Went with Ammon Hatch

Difficult climb. Tougher than I expected. We did the Jacob's Ladder TH route and I was dying the first few miles. Hit a second wind at the cirque and took a nap on the summit. Got sunburned for the first time in over a year. Haven't done a ton of peaks but the view from Lone Peak is the best I've seen. I really liked the severe exposure on the summit and the view of the cottonwood canyons.

A buddy and I climbed from Jacob's Ladder. We started early, so it was real nice going up. Busy day on the mountain - a family group of about 10 people made it to the peak just after we did. The jacob's ladder trail is dry, dusty, steep, and unpleasant for a descent in the afternoon.

But it was nice to stand on top of Lone Peak again.

A great experience, climbed 2 routes, The Center Thumb and The Lowe Route. Both were excellent, the crux on The Center Thumb is a very exposed lay back move using a finger crack, unforgettable!

This was the second time to the summit, first time was in January 2008, we made a ski ascent via Big Willow.

I lived in the shadow of Lone Peak my entire life to age 18. When I returned home from the service, my cousin and I decided to climb to the top from my home in Draper. We carried backpacks and camped one night below the peak and reached the summit the next day.
The day is approximate, the month and year are correct.
