Montana County Highpoints

Montana is home to 56 counties, with 54 different county highpoints.  Showshoe Peak, highpoints of both Lincoln County and Sanders County, and Mount Edith, highpoints of both Meagher County and Broadwater County, are the reason there are fewer highpoints than counties. 

The Treasure State, being the fourth-largest state, is quite geographically diverse.  There is a stark contrast between the mountainous western part of the state and the vast (and largely flat) farming and ranching country in the eastern part of the state.  In fact, there is a little over 10,000 feet of altitude difference between the highest point and the lowest highpoint. 

Getting to the top of all 54 highpoints is a huge endeavor.  There are peaks in several different wilderness areas (some quite remote), peaks in Glacier National Park, and a few highpoints where access to private property is required.  Montana is definitely one of the more difficult states to reach all the county highpoints.

Another reason it can be tricky (especially in Eastern Montana) is in several counties there are multiple unnamed points within a short distance of one another that are VERY close in elevation.  The only way to know for sure is to make your way to each point to ensure that you've hit the true highpoint.
