From Lamarck Col  Sucess!

Scrambled some 3rd and 4th class slabs and cracks from the col w/ Etsuko. Pretty much followed the ridge all the way up. Went to the far left summit by mistake (it looked like the most proud peak). After scrambling its knife-edge ridge to the top, we looked across the summit plateau and realized that there is a pile of talus higher than us. Had to go there :(

Not a bad peak considering that I climbed it with a badly sprained ankle. My 71 year old dad waited for us at the col. This was our second day of seven in the beautiful Sierra backcountry.

23 Oct 07 - Soloed North Couloir with variety of terrain, best of which was bulletproof ice and some mixed rock & ice. Long day but quite the accomplishment.

21 Sept 05 - Well HELL, this was my cheap consolation prize for not being able to make Darwin and Mendel! Wonderful last day of summer marked with nearly a foot of snow at Lamarck Col and menacing clouds for a couple of days. Breath-taking view of Darwin and Mendel from atop Lamarck, well worth the two nights sleep in my truck!

I'm not sure how this ridge was rated class 2 since I was mostly doing solid class 3. Awesome views from the summit except for highpoint to the North.

Fun scramble, with ample low 5th scrambling opportunities - Matt, Jeff, and I had a blast scrambling on the towers and cracks on the peak. Definitely a good consolation prize for wimping out on Mendel.

Climbed Lamarck with Matt and Mark as a consolation for the 2005 Sierra Challenge. Wimped out on Mendel, but will be back for more. Some fun scrambling from the col and plenty of rock formations to play around with at the summit.

I chickened out on the Mendel day hike of Sierra Challenge 2005 when I saw the dark clouds building up at 9 AM. Lamarck was the consolation peak. Of course, that was the first day it *didn't* rain or thunder.

You don't have to be a science wiz to see that Lamarck was not appreciated as much as Mendel and Darwin. The mountains speak for themselves. The peak is not even the highest point in the summit region.

I climbed Mount Lamarck on the second day of my 2003 loop trip, from North Lake to South Lake. From the top I traveled west to pick up the JMT and walked south to Muir Pass. Then took the Dusy Basin trail to return to South Lake. It to this day is one of the most memorable loops that I have taken in the Sierra's.

Lame peak...  Sucess!

...yet for some reason I've been up here three times.

The first time, I stopped by on a three-day backpacking trip through Darwin Canyon/Alpine Col, intending to follow the south ridge from Lamarck Col. With the sun about to set, I had to get back to the col to descend and find a place to stop for the night. I realized after the fact that I'd turned back pretty close to the summit, and had to kick myself.

I came back to dayhike it in Sep 2003 from North Lake, via the SE slope. This was the morning peak for the day; I headed over to get Agassiz out of South Lake that afternoon. I never found the register up here.

My third time was on a Goethe-Lamarck dayhike out of North Lake, basically covering in a day what I'd done in that aforementioned backpacking trip: Up the Piute Pass trail, climb Goethe's NE Ridge, down its south slopes, then up the SW side of Lamarck. In retrospect, it would have been better to follow the good use trail up to Lamarck Col and climb the peak from there. The southwest slopes feature ungodly amounts of sand that were quite exhausting. Despite having climbed the peak before, I still managed to follow footprints to the wrong summit (the higher bump to the NW, Peak 13,464). A careful inspection of my map led me to the right point and even the summit register--a small miracle! Descended the talus on the SE side and back down the Lamarck Col trail.

One of my favorite hikes. I love this area. The variation of terrain, lakes, canyons, and rock formations thrill me. The view off the steep north couloir with the milky blue tarns below are a sight not to be missed.

On aborted attempt to climb Mendel Right Couloir.

Late start and bad weather forced a bivy near the Col. Next day, more crummy weather and sick friend kept us in place. We finally bailed, but tagged Lamarck to keep from being completely skunked.

It took about 45 minutes from the Col, if that.
