Re: Going Back

Well, there is also another reason for my going back so many times. Whitney is the first mountain I come to when driving to the mountains from my house. I can sleep between the rocks of the Alabama Hills, and get a very early start in the morning. That's the best way to get the top in one day and back using a self issuing permit. These self issuing permits are available during the off season which is in November when it's too cold for hundreds of people to crowd the mountain. I also use this mountain for training. I have slept on the top for altitude training a number of times. All that aside, I love the mountain. I think the views are better than the Palisades.

Thanks for coming back Jacek,
Happy climbing,
Marc

Really great photo !

You climbed Whitney 53 times? Of the technical climbs, which is your favorite?

Re: Really great photo !

Thank you Jan. Yes 53, and most of them were in one day to the top and back. I have done only one sort of technical route. I have done "The East Face, 5.6." But, of course most of the route is no harder than 4th class. However, if you get off route you could easily end up doing 5.9 cracks, like it happened to us. But, we rapped down and found the right way.
Thanks for dropping by and the vote,

Re: Really great photo !

Okay, I feel like a fool now talking about the "East Face" route. I just realized you own the page on that. It's a great page and has many great photos. I wish I had a few photos of the climb. I hardly ever carried a camera on my climbs, especially when I climbed with my main partner. He hated cameras, and having photos wasn't very important to me. I have been a SP member for only a few months.
Happy climbing Jan,
Marc

Absolutely beautiful!

I think I have to start flying west instead of east when I go climbing...

Re: nice

Did you try to climb the mountain? If so, did you make it?

Re: nice

No didn't make it to the top =[ I am not experienced enough. I did hike up to around 10000ft. Since the portal road was closed it was quite a hike.

Re: nice

good job,
I know how hard it is to walk on snow covered roads and trails. You can try again in May or June. Try to get a permit now, especially if you go again during the peak season.

Thank you so much SFMountaineer. And I'm sorry about such a long delay in responding. I Don't know how this massage got past me.

Ace picture

Framing and light is fab. And I thought I'd been active climbing my favourite Velino 14 times!

Re: Ace picture

Thanks again Ray. I'll be going to this area again this weekend, not for climbing but just hiking around. I haven't done Whitney in a few years, but I have put in enough miles on it to last me a life time.

I'm amazed I haven't yet commented on this one...

...it's an absolutely outstanding photo! The whole perspective, the fantastic light conditions you surely had, and all the details that come out make it into such a vision! Really, congratulations on that one, Marc!
Cheers,
Eric

Re: I'm amazed I haven't yet commented on this one...

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I wish I had a better camera on that day. Unfortunately, all I had was a small pocket camera with me. But, you just can't go wrong on a clear day like this.
Thank you very much for the visit, Eric.
Happy climbing,
Marc

dang, that is nice.

When I was little my folks used to take me hiking and fishing around that area, but I haven't been back there in years. I keep seeing pics like this one, however, and I will need to go back there.

Re: dang, that is nice.

I guess I have more memories of climbing Mount Whitney than any other Sierra peak, especially since I have made the summit 53 times. Believe or not, I still enjoy hiking up it and hanging out in its outskirts.
