Overview

Summitcross of PirchkoglThe summit

Pirchkogl, also known as Pirchkogel, is the westernmost mountain of the chain seperating the Sellrain valley from the Inn valley to the north. Since the summit is about 800m/2600ft above the Sellrain valley and round about 1200m/4000ft above the Inn valley you have a splendid panorama into all directions. About halfway during the ascent from Kühtai the Schwarzmoos (engl: "black moss") with its lakes offers a perfect place for a break.

Since the ascent is quite short and without any difficulties, Pirchkogl is climbed frequently the hole year. The only chance to be anlone on this mountain is to be faster than the others. I summited at around 9:30am and there where already people descending it. Well, but the crowds came at around 12 o' clock. The route along the west ridge isn' t that crowded I guess... This also applies during the winter months, because there is a ski-area on the slopes towards Kühtai - the highest ski-resort of austria.

This ski-area is the biggest danger to the summit of Pirchkogl. Because there are plans to enlarge that ski-area up to the summit and to open a new ski-area on the gentle west ridge. This would ruin the mountain and destroy two popular ski-routes. For some more details visit www.seilbahn.net which has two overview maps online. Well, right now this is only a plan but I think it' s only a matter of time when it is going to be build...

So if you want to get to the summit without having cable-cars all the way up to the summit, you should hurry...

Maps and routes overview

Routes:
There are two major routes on the mountain which are climbed all the year.

  • Via Schwarzmoos
Starting in Kühtai trail #10/151 follows the ski-tracks untill the beautiful Schwarzmoos ("black moss"). Right now the ski-area ends here and the ugly lifts (which spoil some nice views) disappear. After passing the moss the trail gets steeper until reaching the ridge which leads on to the summit. About 2-3h from Kühtai.
  • West ridge from Feldringer Böden
Starting at Ochsengarten (about 5km from Kühtai) trail #151 leads up to Feldringer Böden. From there it turns east and crosses this beautiful plateu. Now the trail mostly follows the west ridge up to the summit.

  • ZAMG
Not as detailed as the link above, but quite accurate forecasts.
  • OEAV weather forecast
Weather forecast especially for mountaineering porpuses. Unfortunately this page is available in german only.

Getting There

If you plan to visit Pirchkogl, I recommend to get to Kühtai by car, since getting there with puplic transportation lasts a long time.

By car:Kühtai is easily reached by car since the road through the Sellrain valley leads directly to Kühtai. Therefore you have easy access from Kematen and Ötz. From both of theses cities the Inn-Valley-Highway A12 isn' t far from where you have connection to Italy, Switzerland and Germany.
By train:First of all you have to get to Innsbruck. Innsbruck is connected to international trains from Italy and Germany and there are various ways of getting there. A bus connection through the Sellrain-valley starts at Innsbruck central station (line 4166). The schedule of the bus is quite infrequently so check the table on the internet.

Red Tape

There are no fees, permits or seasonal closures. Parking at Kühtai is free even for several days.

Camping

Kühtai is a touristic city with several hotels. Visit the homepage of Kühtai for more information. Additionally to the hotels you can stay at Dortmunder hut right next to Kühtai. This hut is located directly at the road through the Sellrain (well the hut has been there before the road was build...) and open the hole year.

Since the most of Pirchkogls south-east slopes belong the the ski-area I wouldn' t camp there. I guess Feldringer Böden is the better option if you like to camp for a night.

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
