In the western portion of the Central Alborz Mountains of northern Iran, on the crest of the ridgeline that separates the Taleghan Valley to the south from the Alamoot Valley to the north, you will find a series of five 4000 m peaks. East to west, these peaks include:
To the east, Taleghan Peak is separated from the 4022 m Siah Darreh Peak via a 3930 m saddle. To the west, the very long ridgeline of Taleghan Peak slowly descends into the valley of Alamoot River. The northern slopes of Taleghan Peak are quite steep and drop into a valley that eventually goes down to the bottom of the Alamoot River Valley (1800 m). The southern slopes of Taleghan Peak give rise to the Hasan Joon Stream which joins the Taleghan River near the Taleghan Lake behind the Taleghan Dam.
The most direct way to the summit of Taleghan Peak is via its western ridgline. The starting point is the 2200 m village of Aveh. Taleghan Peak can also be climbed starting at the 1980 m village of Hasan Joon to the southeast. From Hasan Joon Village, the trail will take the hiker up the tree-filled valley of Hasan Joon Stream before climbing the grassy lower slopes to reach the summit of Saal Barf Peak. Hikers can then turn west and follow the ridgetop past the Sefid Ab and Siah Darreh Peaks to reach Taleghan Peak.
