100+ great outings near Las Vegas? You can bet on it!

Afoot & Afield Las Vegas & Southern Nevada takes you beyond the bright lights of the country's fastest growing metropolitan area to some of the most rugged, beautiful, and, yes, remote country around. This comprehensive guide features more than 100 hikes within a three-hour drive of the Strip, including popular destinations such as Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Valley of Fire State Park, Death Valley National Park, and Mt. Charleston. It will also help you discover places you might not have heard of, such as Anniversary Narrows, Arrow Canyon, Bowl of Fire, and Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness.

Each trip showcases the diversity of this region, from the geological wonders and rare life forms surviving in the Mojave National Preserve to the ancient petroglyphs round along the canyons and caves of the desert.

These trips are tailored for every type of hiker, with routes ranging from less than 1 mile for an easy wander through a slot canyon, to a 22 mile, round-trip trek up Southern Nevada's highest peak.

A helpful guide
This book along with Andy Zdon's Desert Summits will help to provide you with the information you need to have to get you to the base of the mountain or area you wish to visit. Each hike has a set of directions and a map sketch that will aid you in this. I am of the opinion that where it comes to anything in the desert, I want all the information I can get my hands on. This is a well organized book, the author has broken the hikes into four areas, Western, Northern, Eastern and Southern, all related to the Las Vegas area. This is not a climbers guide but it'll provide some helpful information to those who are into climbing the Desert Peaks.
