Product Description

The subtitle of this book is "True Stories of Survival and Tragedy in New York's Adirondacks".

There are twenty different true stories in this book and unlike the vaguely comparable volume for Yosemite which statistically details all the incidents befalling those who ventured there; this book is a quick but engrossing read. The very rich, Adirondack guide history is covered including the legendary John Cheney whose misadventures included a pair of bull moose, misplaced pistols and a wolf. Lost hikers, campers, stranded climbers, downed planes, lightning strikes, fires and flooding all can be found in this book sometimes combined in the same incident. Bronski's low-key writing style with actual quotes and touches of humor makes the chapters a good read for almost anyone even those who have never been to the Adirondacks. Bronski's background as a SAR team member adds much to every aspect of this book.

The Epilogue includes several well outlined 'maxims' for outdoor adventures as well as a timeline of the misadventures and search and rescues covered in the book.

Interesting book
A fast read with high interest in every chapter. Lots of background on the people in each incident so you feel you know the person who is lost or hurt or helping hunt for the injured party.

My only criticism of this book is the lack of a decent map of the Adirondacks. I realize that this would have been difficult to place in a book of this size but I found myself constantly referencing a New York map as I started each chapter.
