He was a bg figure here in Bakersfield. We have a statue of him in our downtown and a catholic school here is named after him. Interesting man indeed.
Hey that's pretty neat that the town has commemorated him. I wouldn't have guessed that. Very cool.
You know, despite the possible fact that Bakersfield is one of those places most people probably don't think about much if you don't live there, I've long had this feeling that there's more to it than meets the eye; certainly historically. Too, there's some notable artistic history attached to the place, especially with music and writing. I'm volunteering waaaaaay too much when I say this, but I too once wrote a book of dubious value in which Bakersfield played a significant role as a location. To me anyway, the place matters in its own way.
Have you ever read any of Mark Arax's non fiction? Lots of really fascinating insights to and interpretations of the greater central valley. "West of the West" is a book I very highly recommend to anyone with a real interest in the greater contemporary culture of California (i.e, not the stereotypes) as it relates to history, and the cultural resonance of what this nebulous idea of 'the west' means today. Rather than focus on the more common aspects of life in this state, he tells some fascinating stories of lives in place like Fresno, of migrant farm workers, of misunderstood or seemingly invisible subcultures that have nevertheless been vital factors in creating what we think of as the west today.
Jesus...what the hell am I doing? Should go do something constructive...
