Not sure that this was the case, but I believe the idea they were some kind of mixed breed thing was being tossed around.

CA Wolf Management & some Red Wolf/Coy Wolf Links

by colinr » Fri Mar 22, 2013 1:32 am

Breeding plans do not seem to be in the works in CA. I'm fine with a patient approach and lack of rush by the government to intervene in the wolf's natural breeding efforts. As previously discussed, the politics are messy in Northern CA, as they are in Oregon, and in the northern Rockies. The possibility of more gray wolves in CA is intriguing, and I wouldn't mind hearing about natural interbreeding with similar species either. Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Some problems will arise and be worked out to some extent. Whatever shall be shall be. It is a cool story to follow. If wolves were in immediate danger of extinction in the West, I'd be more concerned about OR-7 succeeding in being more than an apparently single part time resident of California.

Looks like OR-7's sister (OR-5) has been trapped and killed in Idaho; she should have stayed with her brother:

The Wolf may finally have a Mate

by colinr » Tue May 13, 2014 1:11 am

It sounds like he has mostly been hanging out in southern Oregon lately, but OR-7 may have found a mate. It seems as though wolf populations will be part of the California landscape. A decision regarding state level endangered species designation in California was postponed for 90 days after a meeting in April.
