Sunset Thru Fire Snags

August of 1988 saw a dry lightning storm lift off the North Cascade Mountains and hammer it’s way into Ferry County. Over thirty wildland fires started and while most were suppressed by local firefighters two escaped containment and burned together across the ridgeline of the Kettle River Range. By early September the ‘White Mountain Fire’ was over 21,000 acres is size. This image takes in the sunset several years later thru some of the White Mountain fire snags.

Question for Foster...

You really have some remarkable and historic
images of this area. Were you born & raised
in eastern Washington ???

I was born in Tacoma. In 1988, I was part of
a 5-person fire crew stationed out of Enumclaw, WA.

I remember the 'White Mountain Fire.' Some of my buddies were sent over to fight it.
I must of "lucked out," because I got sent
to eastern Oregon where the fires weren't
so devastating.

Hey, thanks for the memories... almost 23 years ago? Geez, it seems like ONLY yesterday.

My pedigree starts out on Long Island NY rambles around New England, drifts down into Texas, follows old route 66 out to California, makes a stop in Colorado and finally winds its way to the Pacific NW. I’ve lived in NE WA since 1976. Thanks for asking...
