Temple Crag at Night from 2nd Lake (Later at Night)

Temple Crag at Night from 2nd Lake (Later at Night)

September 5th, 2011 - 30 minute exposure of Temple Crag from the shoreline of 2nd Lake. Coloration along the horizon is from the streaking effect of the Milky Way Galaxy rotating in the night sky. This photo is different from the other one as it was taken later at night and had a lower ISO. The light on the water was from the headlamps of the climbers descending the drainage from the Palisade Glacier.

Re: I love

Thanks! The camera equipment is heavy, but worth it. By the looks of your outfit, it's probably best that you're using a smaller & lighter camera :-D

Gotta try this!

Didn't you post some other great ones like this? Every time I see one I am amazed; definitely doable; just have to get to a good spot sometimes!

Thanks for posting some inspiration!

Re: Gotta try this!

I've posted a couple. I've taken a lot more this summer that I've only put up on Picasa, but maybe as the weather turns bad I'll find more time to upload them to SP :-)

You definitely don't get to the good spots with the time & equipment by accident though! Although I've gotten better at integrating night photo opportunities with climbs.

For this shot we were close enough to the lake that after we made it back to camp and ate dinner I just bivied in my bag on some rocks by the shore as I took these shots. My other favorite night photo from the trip was from our first night, where I made sure our sleeping spot had a good view (knowing from prior trips), and took the long exposure as I slept before waking up to do our first climb of the weekend.

That is a piece of art

What a wonderful shot, truly beautiful on so many levels. I would pay money in a gallery for that and have it in my home.

Re: That is a piece of art

Thanks Marmaduke! I'm finally starting to get the hang of this, so hopefully this next year I can start getting some real good ones.

Re: That is a piece of art

Well Marmaduke... why not just download the full resolution shot and hang it in your home now for free?

Re: That is a piece of art

are you suggesting stealing my nice picture? ;-) Maybe I should upload a version with my name stamped across it :-P

A lot of the price you pay for buying a nice picture in a shop goes towards the cost of printing and framing anyways, so he wouldn't really be getting it for free if he copied it properly :-)

good shot, long exposures can always surprise you with things you can't see by yourself

Re: ;oP

One of the things I love most about doing it! It requires you to really know what you are doing with your camera, but even then each shot is a surprise.

I've learned something new every time with how different subtle factors can have huge effects in a shot.

Re: Impressive Night shot

Thanks! I was fairly tired from 2 long days of climbing, but fortunately I was able to do this one in my sleep! :-)

funny

I saw a thumbnail of this & thought 'That's an absolutely incredible shot, & totally looks like one of Mark's,' before seeing who posted it. Sure enough... Great shot, one of those that a) should be framed, & b) makes me want to be there right now... :) Thanks.

Re: funny

Thanks! One of my 'New Years' resolutions is to finally get some of my photographs properly printed and mounted for my office & apartment. I should mark this as one to put on the list :-)

Hopefully school is going well for you, but you're still finding time to steal away to the great outdoors.
