McFarland Peak
Did this hike on September 3, 2006. Started off at the Bristlecone Trailhead. One of the hikers in my group helped a hunter load a buck into this guys truck. We then started off on the bristlecone trail. At about 2.8 miles we went onto the Bonanza Trail. We saw a wild horse.

There were about 3 times you go up saddles that go up to about 9950 feet or so, then back down a few hundred feet. We then got to the saddle 5.1 miles into the hike. It only took our LVMC group 2 hrs and 20 minutes to get there. Elevation at the saddle before we went up the chute was about 9581 feet.

The 1200 foot chute took us an hour and ten minutes to get up to the summit once we started. There were lots of class 3 sections but no major problems. We spent about 30 minutes on the summit. Great views of Charleston, Macks Peak, the Sisters,Mummy, Bonanza Peak, Willow Peak, could even make out Telescope Peak to the west.

About 15 minutes after we started our descent we heard some thunder and lightning. So we got up to the peak just in time. Some small hail fell too. It was smaller than pea size. I slipped on a log but caught my balance in time. Coming back we saw a baby horse. I'm guessing it was looking for it's mother which was the one we probalby saw this morning. It stood and looked at us from less than 10 feet away.

We took a shortcut towards the end of the trail, but it only saved about .1 miles. The total trip was about 13.1 miles round trip. It took us about 7 hrs round trip.
