Mt. Hood Hogsback Dead End
Mt. Hood Hogsback Dead End
This was the first climb of Mt. Hood for my son Patrick and I. We left the Timberline Parking Area about 2 AM and climbed up the SnowCat road in beautiful moonlight, and arrived at Copper Spur at dawn. Entering Devil's Kitchen, returning climbers told us that the Hogsback had shifted to the west, and was impassible. A few climbers had tried to ascend using the Old Chute route, but the summit ridge was icy and windy and they still couldn't reach the summit. So we stopped at the Hogsback. Still a wonderful day of climbing up in the high ridges with many sights, smells (fumaroles) and sounds (rock slides). Glissading down to the parking area in brilliant sunshine was fun.
