A "6000m" summit in March ?

by gnome » Mon Feb 08, 2010 9:40 am

Hello,

I have some free time to spend in a trip in March and I am looking for an idea for a non technical summit of more than 5500 meters. I was thinking of south america near Fiambala, but I don't know if it is still the right time to climb in this region...
Any suggestion will be appreciated !

Regards

PS : I live in France

Take a look at the volcanos around Arequipa in Peru. You can get up to 6300, non-technical and the weather should be okay in March.

Agreed. Chachani comes to mind.

South America should be the place indeed! Check per area tough because it won't be all the same. Peruvian Andes are more like May-Sep whereas mountains like Aconcagua are January.

I already summited Chachani but Ampato and Coropuna seem to be feasible in this season... Thank you very much for these suggestions, I have to decide myself very quick now...

Gnome, take a look at Damavand in Iran. It will be a LOT cheaper then South America and it's almost 6000m's high. It will be a bit harder to climb in March, but possible nonetheless.

You can get a VISA on entry and logistics are really easy as the mountain is only 2 - 3 hours driving from the capital, Teheran.

Thank you very much for this suggestion WouterB, but... I went last year to Damavand ! I loved the area and the country by the way.
