Interesting new study about falls while hiking...

75% occur on descent... well, technically, I guess all falls involve descending, just not by choice...

The Daily Telegraph must be recycling old data. A similar study was done back in the 1980s and found the same problem - most injuries occurred while descending. Only difference I recall was the rate was a little less (68%?) than what the Telegraph is reporting.

It's not even really newsworthy, at least not to a climber. People are more tired during descents, the snow is wetter and more slippery, and you are usually facing away from the mountain instead of hugging it. Plus all the dangerous rappelling people do during descents.

Descents are scary and hazardous. I try to avoid them.
