Southwest CO weekend adventure

by Gafoto » Thu Apr 15, 2010 4:08 am

I'm planning on a weekend trip heading out from Moab to southwest Colorado this weekend (we'll probably end up in Durango). Being that I'm only equipped with snowshoes and a partner who isn't too keen on spending a long, brutal day in the mountains, I'm looking for suggestions for some mid-length scenic hikes somewhere in the San Juans. Bagging a peak, even a little one, would be great for me but not necessary.

I'm sure there are better options out there, but I did a pretty scenic showshoe back in February near Mt. Sneffels.

I think I found the route in this Google Book.

A couple of Saturdays ago Sand Canyon and Rock Canyon were really nice. Got out 07:00. didn't see Mt. Bikers until 13:00 or so. really beautiful.

Black Face Mountain would be a good choice if you want to bag a summit:

Thanks guys! Black Face Mountain looks like it might be about right for us. Hope the weather stays good this weekend. The canyons are beautiful I'm sure but I spend 5 days out of the week out in Moab, working on and around Jeep Safari routes, Mountain biking trails and other roads in the boonies so I've had more sandstone views than I know what to do with. Sneffels is on my hit list for sure, I'll be back for that peak soon.
