San Francisco to Bishop - fastest route?

by jareds » Wed Apr 27, 2011 7:26 am

Not sure which roads are open at this point - planning on taking hwy 50 to 395 then heading down, would this be the fastest?

thanks!

Your only other option is highway 88, I very sure taking 50 t0 89 to 395 is the best bet.

A bit of a short-cut would be to take NV-207 over Kingsbury Grade (just east of downtown South Shore) to US-395 which will cut some time off the trip.

Hwy.50 to Hwy.89 at Meyers,South over Luther Pass to Hwy.89-88 junction ,East on 88 to Hwy.395 . That bypasses South Lake Tahoe traffic.

Hi jareds,

FYI: It looks like Hwy 50 is scheduled to be closed April 15 - May 30, 2011.

I've taken 120 to 108 to 395 many times. I think its pretty efficient. I take 108 to 395 instead of 120 all the way to avoid Yosemite traffic. I think heading up towards Sacramento to get to 50 is quite a few miles in the wrong direction, even if its more freeway. Just my two cents.

Guess I should have checked. Sorry. But otherwise a good way to go.

In the winter there's daily airline service from SFO and SJC to Mammoth. You could rent a car and drive to Bishop in less than an hour. May not be the cheapest solution but it's something I've considered as that 7-8+ hr drive via South Lake Tahoe is pretty brutal.

drove to south tahoe then down on 89, through bridgeport then down through lee vining, etc.
the hwy 50 closure has not occurred yet, but all the orange cones and signs were in place so it'll prob happen soon.

took 6 hours 15 minutes back to downtown SF, not much traffic, that doesn't include breaks.

I looks like hwy 89 over monitor pass is open. I would take 50 to 89 over monitor pass to 395. The fastest option from San Fran this time of year is probably to go south to Bakersfield and take hwy 178 through Kern Canyon. Then head north on 395. That's a beautiful drive too, once you get past Bakersfield.

I took 395 from SoCal all the way up to Tahoe a month ago- I would have to think that is one of the most beautiful drives in the U.S.

Totally true, Duke. Has a bit of a "Tibetan plateau" feel to it. Spectacular.
