OverviewA very few people climb it, mostly the people who live in the area, and this makes it beautiful and silent! The route to the top is not difficult but a little bit hard for amateurs, because sometimes you can easily loose the sign! There is a great view from the top on the Ankogel-Group, on Hochalmspitze and on Sauleck, and of course on the town: Mallnitz!
Getting ThereThe mountain is located in the eastern part of the austrian Alps. The easiest to start our route is in Mallnitz at about 20 minutes from Obervellach and at about 1-1.5 hours from Lienz or Spittal / by car/.
You can also start your route from Dösental-Wolliger hütte near where the route to Sauleck starts but you have to go a little bit more by car!
There are two directions to the top: the first starts at Mallnitz (1191m) /nr.522/ and goes through Auernig (2130m), Törlkopf (2446m) and Kleine Maresenspitz (2656m) to the top: Maresenspitz (2915m). Only the last one km is a little bit hard from Kleine Maresenspitz to Maresenspitz. The other route starts at Wolliger hütte (1576m) /Dösentall, nr.523/ and reaches the nr.522 route at Auernig and continues in nr.522 to the top. The trip from Mallnitz is harder, because it's 400 meters lower than Wolliger-hütte. From Auernig the two routes are the same!
Red TapeThe mountain is climbable in every seasons and there aren't any parking or route fees in the area!
More infos about the Mallnitz region!
When To ClimbPossible to climb in all seasons, but the easiest and fastest is in summer or autumn. It is more beautiful in the winter than in other seasons. There are several kinds of wild alpine animals on the mountain and of course cows and sheep. The sheep can go up to the top if the weather is good!
CampingThere are several hotels or houses at Mallnitz (at about 6-15 Euros per night, 2005 ), but you can also take some nights at Wolliger-hütte / not far from Mallnitz, on the route to Dösen /. And there are also some houses near Wolliger hütte, maybe a little more expensive than the houses in Mallnitz.
A tiny, nice campsite is located just behind the Haus Obernig. Travelling from Obervellach upon entering Mallnitz, immediately after the second bridge crossing the river Seebach, follow the tent sign. Detailed map at: www.mallnitz.at!
You'll probably find the receptionist in a wooden house at the back. It costs about 6/person/night (you have to pay extras for hot water, washing machine...ect.-but these are not always necessary!) It is an excellent sleeping place for bikers, hikers and for tired travellers!
Mountain ConditionsI have no informations about websites or phone numbers about the mountain. There is a web cam in Mallnitz towards Auernig /2130m/ but no web cams or weather station on the peak. (I'll look for telephone numbers!!!)
