When you look across the western skyline from the northern end of Indian Creek, you will see two striking towers dominating the landscape. The one to the north and the larger one is North Six Shooter. This spectacular tower is located just east of Canyonlands National Park. The tower hosts classic crack climbs such as Lightning Bolt Cracks and Liquid Sky. The summit views let you peek deep into the Maze and Needles sections of Canyonlands to the west and to the numerous buttresses of Indian Creek to the east.

Getting There

If you are coming from Moab, UT drive 40 miles south on highway 191 and turn right (west) on highway 211. This road will get you into Indian Creek passed Newspaper Rock. From Newspaper rock drive anoter 12 miles on highway 211 until you see the sign for Davis Canyon Road on your left. Leave the paved road and open the gate and drive through the fence (don't forget to close the gates behind you). Drive south and towards the tower on this very rough road as far as your vehicle allows. This road is only suitable for high clearence 4x4 vehicles as it goes over large rocks, creek beds and washes. The flash floods of October 2006 might have made the travel even worse. It is possible to push until the edge of the cone of South Six Shooter. From the spot you parked your car, keep aiming towards the tower and follow a creek bed, which will take you to the base of the cliff bands under the cone.

Red Tape

It is BLM land so there were no permits required. Be aware of the cryptobiotic soil and don't trample this fraigle environment. Stay on rocks and creek washes as much as possible. Also be extra creful with human waste. The American Alpine Club has provided Indian Creek with wagbags at all major trail heads (voluntary donations are welcomed). Use these convenient wagbags and take out your waste and dispose it when you get back to the civilization.

Camping

There are no established camprgrounds but one can camp on BLM land for free. Once again please use wagbags and care for the cryptobiotic soil. The continued free access to Indian Creek and its surroundings depends on our actions!
