Overview

An excellent general mountaineering objective in the spectacular Tonquin Valley. This peak is not very hard or technical, requiring only glacier travel knowledge and scrambling ability.

The views from the summit are spectacular, giving you an excellent vantage point on the Tonquin, for scoping out routes on Paragon, Bennington, and Erebus.

Getting There

From Jasper, drive south on Hwy 93 to the Hwy 93A turnoff. Follow 93A until you see signs for Mt. Edith Cavell. Turn right and follow road to parking lot for the Tonquin Valley. This is the Astoria River trailhead.

Follow trail for 18 km to the Alpine Club of Canada Wates-Gibson Hut. The approach from the hut is very straightforward, less than 1 hour to base of climb.

Red Tape

Parks Canada entry pass paid at park gate.

Parks Canada wilderness pass and hut fees through the Alpine Club of Canada if staying at hut. If camping at Amethyst Lake, you need to sign in at the visitors centre and pay backcountry camping fees.

You can do a voluntary registration with the wardens if you wish.

Camping

It is best to stay at the ACC Wates-Gibson Hut, as the nearest backcountry campgrounds would add several kilometers to the approach.
