Overview

While in summer by the NW ridge of Viševnik a marked path goes, in winter it is not appropriate for skiing. If you by all means want to reach from the summit of Viševnik Srenjski preval (for example to ascend Mali Draški vrh or to continue towards Veliki Draški vrh), or if you wish to continue the skiing through Solnice valley, then it is best to cross the N face of Viševnik.

Viševnik N face is steep and rocky. It depends on snow conditions, which ski passages are possible. While some very steep (alpinistic skiing) descents are possible from the ridge already very close to the summit, or when enough snow even from the summit itself, the usual ski descent into the N face would be from the shoulder on the E ridge. You can see that point on picture 1 - it is not from the first horizontal point on the ridge, but from the second, lower one.

How to ascend the summit of Viševnik, see on the main page.

_____________

Route Description

Picture 1 - The N face of Viševnik

From the summit of Viševnik we ski down by the usual route, following the slope just below the E ridge (the ascent route). The first some 30 meters are very steep and require quite some care, especially in a hard snow. Then we start tending towards the left and hit the E ridge itself. The upper passage is usually too steep and does not have enough snow in the short and rocky couloir. The second (lower) passage is wide and comfortable, but steep as well. We need just to slide into the NE slope of Viševnik, and cross it towards the left. The steep slope requires attention, but sliding down there would mean only going the whole snowy slope down (below, there are no rocks). When crossing, we are aiming the good visible high saddle north of the summit of Viševnik. Namely, from the north, a short side ridge descends down and after the high saddle it has a distinct, good visible bump in it. If everything fine, we shall do a nice traverse, lose just a little of altitude and reach that short side ridge (the saddle). On the other side, we have a broad, free slope down into the basin below the N face of Viševnik. We can ski everywhere, steep is only the upper part. When approaching the bottom, our next decision depends on our intention. To reach Srenjski preval, we must cross the slope below Viševnik NW ridge as high as possible. Even though we shall need to ascend the last 20 or 30 meters to the saddle. If we continue towards the Point 1979 and the saddle above Solnice valley, we just freely ski down, as long as it goes. Some ascent awaits us on the other side anyway.

From Srenjski preval we can attempt other goals. If we want just to conclude the tour, we can return on Rudno polje:
> From Srenjski preval on Jezerce, down on Konjščica meadow and around on Rudno polje.
> From below Viševnik N face towards the right and over the E ridge of Viševnik (Kačji rob) on Zlata voda and down.
> Through Solnice valley towards Debeli vrh and right down on Pokljuka.

_____________

Essential Gear

Usual tour skiing equipment. For more hard variants and in a hard snow, have also ice pick.

_____________
