Chihuahuan Desert Flora

Overview

The Chihuahuan Desert is the largest North American desert, covering about 175,000 square miles. This desert region encompasses portions of southeastern Arizona, southern and central New Mexico, and west Texas, however, the majority of the desert is located in Mexico, stretching south to Zacatecas. One of the more prominent features of this desert is the numerous mountain ranges separated by valleys (bolsons) throughout the region. The San Andres and Doña Ana Mountains in New Mexico and the Franklin Mountains in Texas are some good examples.

Like the Great Basin Desert, the Chihuahuan Desert is categorized as a shrub desert. Creosote bush is widespread, and other plants such as the yucca, agave, and medium-size cactus are regional indicators. There is more diversity of cacti in this region than in any other. And when the plants are in bloom, the colors of the desert are awe-inspiring.
