Overview

The Hörnli hut is the starting point for climbing the Matterhorn via the Hörnli ridge or Zmutt ridge or via the North wall.

It was built in 1880 by the SAC section Monte Rosa.
In 1965 it was knocked down and rebuilt.

The hut is located at 3.260 m and you have a great view from the hut to Monte Rosa. You also see the complete Hörnli ridge of Matterhorn. When you arrive at the hut you should have a look at the route as the start of the Hörnli ridge is difficult to find.

The hut is built at a ridge. There is no water source in that area, so melt water is accumulated at the start of the Hörnli ridge and conducted to the hut. It is no drinking water and must be cooked before use.

The hut has 120 sleeping places. In the summer season there are ca. 4.000 accomodations at the hut. There is also a winter room with 15 places and a kitchen with gas-cooker, opened the complete winter.

How to get there

In summer you reach the Hörnli hut from the mountain station of the ropeway Matterhorn Express, Schwarzsee. You hike at a trail within 2 hours to the hut.

From Schwarzsee there are marks and signs so it is easy to find and reach the Hörnli hut.

Reservation

As the hut is mostly booked up you should book early.
Many mountain guides reserve 1 year before!
So it is reasonable to book 4 weeks before to get a bed. Else you have to sleep on the floor!

Winter.

Voted 10/10

Check also the possibilities for winter. Last year there was opened big winter-room with 12(if I remeber correct)beds, and kitchen with gas-cooker. Very comfortable.

	Voted 10/10	We both had with Jck. We carried tent with us beecause we were not sure if it is opened during winter. That is the reason we talk about it.
