Description
The genus
Helleborus belongs to the family
Ranunculaceae. Most of its species are native to Europe, although there are exceptions to this (
H. thibetanus and
H. vesicarius). Many of them are poisonous (hence the name, coming from Greek:
hellein = "to kill" and
bora = "food"), including the peculiar
Christmas rose (
Helleborus niger), which is flowering in the winter.
