Description

The genus Helleborus belongs to the family Ranunculaceae. Most of its species are native to Europe, although there are exceptions to this (H. thibetanus and H. vesicarius). Many of them are poisonous (hence the name, coming from Greek: hellein = "to kill" and bora = "food"), including the peculiar Christmas rose (Helleborus niger), which is flowering in the winter.
