Wahweap Hoodoos - GSENM
Grand Staircase-Esclante National Monument Summitpost Info

The easy 9 mile round-trip hike to the Wahweap Hoodoos begins in Big Water, not too far from Kanab, Utah. The pedestal rocks are just as they appear, very fragile. At one time a freshwater lake covered the region. What is left today is unique, special and primitive. May it stay that way!

Thank you. It's hard to go wrong with the Wahweap Hoodoos. Although there is a short cut out there that the BLM does not like people to know about, the hike is a much funner way to go. I like to stroll down waterways that don't have much elevation change. It's almost like a vacation! This one you don't want to do in the heat of summer though.

If this has ever been climbed? Looks like it'd be unbelievable difficult....

Probably not a good idea. The hoodoos are extremely fragile and every Whaweap Hoodoo lover would want to womp on your head. ;)

They seem like they would melt with each rain. It's amazing they are even there.

This one has been on my list for the past
20 years! That Kaiparowits Plateau area
is totally awesome! I could probably stand
to explore every nook & cranny there, for
the rest of my life. Where is the trailhead?
Is it just north of Big Water, somewhere along that '327' road? Looks like a good
one to do when the days get longer, and
a person could hang around in the area to
watch a SUNSET. Is there a gate to go thru?
Thank you; I want to go SOON.

It looked like there use to be a gate across the waterway, but it was pretty busted up. You drive through the tiny town of Big Water and begin hiking at the edge of town. Beautiful hike, but you want to do it when the water is flowing and not in the dead of summer. That would take all the enjoyment from it. No water and brutal heat.

YES, I'm very familiar with the "dead of
summer." I've observed lizards that were
so hot, they had to raise their fore-legs
off the ground, kind of like mini-dinosaurs!
I'll let you go. Thanks for the information.

I saw a photo like that once and began the search to find those big, tall, white hoodoos. They are over by Big Water in the Grand Staircase. Fun hike and the hoodoos are magnificent!

I like how there's contrast between the hoodoo and the cliff, but not too much.

We have some hoodoos in Oregon, but not nearly as beautiful as these. Great photo!

I want to live on the Oregon Coast one day, but so far I have never even got to go to the state! The Wahweap Hoodoos are the coolest ones I have ever seen. They are so fragile and different from most.
