Huge panorama of Piz Cambrena, Piz Palü, Bellavista and Piz Zupo - from La Spedla ridge on Piz Bernina

La Spedla is the local name for the south ridge leading to the summit of Piz Bernina. In German, it's called the Spalla Grat. From Rifugio Marco e Rosa, the route begins on the glacier, but higher up it is a rocky ridge, grade III. Being on the end of the rope, between two steep sections, I had plenty of time to look around and take pictures as Hermann prepared to lead the next steep bit. From left to right: Piz Cambrena (3606), Piz Palü (3900), Bellavista (3922) and Piz Zupo (3996). Warning: the full picture is huge! I purposely posted this picture in great detail, in case anybody wants to look at the finer points, or print it. Besides, it will still be useful by the time we all have 100" screens ;-)

As Piz Bernina is a very popular peak, it´s not unusual to see quite a few groups on and around the mountain.

The pair with the helmets nearby are on the Spedla ridge, like us.

Hidden behind the ridge on the right of the picture lies Rifugio Marco e Rosa. After climbing Piz Bernina, you can spend the night there, but you also have the option of descending a bit further the same day. The trail with several groups on it that you can see on the glacier eventually leads to the Diavolezza refuge, or, alternatively, the Boval refuge.

I was just considering one Bernina album or trip report after I´m finished posting my Bernina pictures ...
