Washington 1000-ft Prominence Peaks

Overview

This is an extension of the Washington 2000-ft prominence peaks list, which can be viewed here. The 2000-ft prominence list is in a similar format but quite a bit shorter. It contains 144 peaks (rows) plus four more peaks that almost have 2000 feet of clean prominence. The list below is quite a bit longer (over 1000 peaks). The top 148 peaks should be in the same order as the 2000-ft prominence list. The 1000-ft prominence list contains 785 peaks with 1000 feet of clean prominence, 823 peaks with 1000 feet of mean prominence,* and 846 peaks with 1000 feet of maximum prominence.** These counts assume Armstrong Mountain's highest point is actually on the Canadian side of the International Border. The list has been extended down to a cut-off of 900 feet of mean prominence because it was a nice value to stop at. By extending this far, the list by default captures all peaks that are within one contour of having 1000 feet of maximum prominence. As an example, any peak with 920 feet of clean prominence that does not have a spot elevation at its summit but instead merely a closed contour (40-ft contour interval) could have a maximum of 998 feet of prominence: 920+39+39 = 998 ft. Given that the USGS maps themselves have a standard maximum error associated with them that is about 7m (21 ft), in actuality peaks with less than 920 feet of maximum prominence could have a real prominence that creeps up on 1000 ft. So the cut-off could be just about at 900 feet of mean prominence, even if it is statistically unlikely that a peak way down there in the list will qualify in real life when someone goes out and measures with a very long ruler. * the mean prominence is taken as the average elevation of the first contour above (that encircles) the peak and the first contour below the peak's key saddle. This is unlike John Kirk's Lists of John method where he will use a spot elevation in the saddle, which isn't in my view an infallible procedure for calculating prominence (e.g., is this 4694-ft key saddle for Crystal Mountain the elevation of the road junction or the elevation of the lowest point in the saddle?). Plus, he has been inconsistent of his application of these spot elevations. And how far away from the crossing divide does a spot elevation have to be to be considered the lowest point of the saddle? ** the maximum prominence is not the same as error range prominence. It is the prominence calculated using the lowest contour that does not encircle the peak minus 1 foot. One foot is subtracted because that actual contour cannot be included because it does not encircle the peak. Error range prominence is an inexact computation. It adds some prominence based on the inherent inaccuracies of the maps themselves. The list below has been sorted by Clean prominence. As such the Mean and Max prominence columns will not always be in order.
