Monument Peak

Monument Peak is the highpoint of Carbon County at 10,452'.

Getting there is too easy - a long dirt road takes you to the summit. A passenger car could get most of the way, if not the entire way if the road is dry. (It would be pretty hairy even in 4WD if it is wet).

Getting There

According to the book 'High in Utah' -

Just southeast of Soldier Summit on U.S. highway 6 between Spanish Fork and Price, turn west onto Utah Highway 96.

Drive to Scofield and continue past the town.

About 4 miles before reaching Clear Creek, take a right on Utah highway 31/264.

Drive to the county line and take a left, heading south.

Drive 5.2 miles and take a left at a junction in the road marked by a sign describing a gate in 300 feet.

Continue for 2.7 miles and take another left, which is a hairpin turn of sorts, cutting back north to the summit.

As far as I know, there is no hiking trail up to the summit.

Red Tape

There are some areas off the road that are posted No Trespassing.

Camping

West of Electric Lake is Flat Canyon Campground. It has restrooms and drinking water, and charges a fee.

I will post pictures as soon as I get copies. I lost my camera sometime after 'bagging' this peak.

Snowshoeing

Dear prospective Utah Counties Peaks-bagger, This may be a good mountain to scratch of your list during the Winter. I snowshoed the mountain on Saturday by parking at a turn out just below the Electric Lake resevoir. You can then make your own path (as commonly done when snowshoeing) up the face of the mountain to the peak. The first 1,500-1,800 ft. elevation climb is strenuous, but once upon the ridge it's easy (and scenic) going from there. I did make the observation that the same road mentioned above is cleared during the winter. Whether one can enter the road freely during this time (and there are no locked gates) may be another question which I can't answer. It's cold at the top. -Allgauerjodler

Gate Closure

I'm not sure what the dates are, but there is a gate barring the dirt road from 264 to the summit of Monument Peak. As the post above states, there is no gate to reach Electric Lake, however the final dirt road to the summit is guarded by a locked gate at certain times, as we learned to our chagrin yesterday.
