This is an easy mountain, which is climbed by many meople. It's a mountain on your way to Obergabelhorn. The easiest routes on the mountain are rated PD (French). The routes are mainly rockclimbing (II - III). Only the last few hundred meters consist of snow. Time needed to get to the top of Wellenkuppe from "Rothornhutte" is about 2,5 hours. It will take much longer if there is a lot of snow on the rocks after bad weather. Route finding will be much more difficult. On top great view of eg. Matterhorn. For detailed route descriptions, look in "Clubfuhrer Walliser Alpen, Vom Col Collon zum Theodulpass nr.3" This book describes almost 1200 routes on mountains on the area as mentioned in the titel.
To get there, walk from Zermatt (1614 m.) in about 4 hours to the Rothornhutte (3198 m.) The hut is situated at the beginning of the SE-ridge of the Zinalrothorn. Follow the signs "Hotel trift (2337 m.) From here you can see Rothornhutte. Save some energy for the last couple of hundred meters.
No summit fees or pemits required. Travelling by car or train to Zermatt. Notice, cars are not allowed in Zermatt. You will have to leave it at the parking spots (not for free) in Täsch (last village before Zermatt). From here take the train to Zermatt.
Zermatt itself has serveral campings.
Another good one is Camping Attermenzen in Randa. Situated just before Täsch. This one is a wintercamping too.
When To Climb
The best time to climb is july up to september. Out of season, when a lot of snow has fallen, route finding is harder.
Swiss huts are expensive. Bed and dinner will cost about Euro 30 per day. Water is not for free.
